Which Tagging Technology Is Right for You?
Most projects use a combination — we recommend the right mix based on your asset mix, environment, and budget.
QR Code
QR codes store asset information in a square grid that any smartphone can scan — no special hardware needed. Each scan pulls up the asset’s ID, location, custodian, and verification history. They are our default choice for offices, IT assets, and furniture: low cost, quick to deploy, and easy for your own team to use after the project ends.
RFID Tags
RFID tags contain a small chip and antenna that transmit the asset’s ID to a handheld reader — no line-of-sight needed. A single sweep of a room or rack can capture dozens of tagged assets at once, cutting physical verification time dramatically on large sites. Choose RFID for manufacturing plants, warehouses, and hospitals with thousands of assets, where the higher per-tag cost is repaid in faster audits and recurring verification cycles. See our RFID tagging cost guide for current per-tag pricing.
Metal / Anodised tags
Anodised aluminium or stainless steel tags with permanently etched asset numbers and barcodes. Choose these for assets that face heat, chemicals, moisture, or rough handling — plant machinery, outdoor equipment, tools, and infrastructure — where standard labels would fade or peel within months. Slightly higher per-tag cost, but they last the life of the asset.
Barcode
The most economical tagging option — printed polyester or vinyl labels with a unique barcode per asset, scanned with standard handheld scanners many companies already own. Best suited for high-volume, low-value assets in clean indoor environments: retail stock rooms, back offices, and stores. The trade-off: barcodes hold less information than QR codes and need line-of-sight scanning one asset at a time.
